SEATING

Retrofitting seats in a camper van is something that many people find complicated. Through our collaboration with Mobiframe, we have a solution that simplifies both installation and, above all, registration inspection. We provide the TUV report required for registration inspection, no additional certificate or similar is required from the vehicle manufacturer or its general agent.

Seating modification and regulations

Modifying a vehicle to either add or remove seats in the Nordics can be a challenge since the regulations regarding seating is very strict. There are some basic facts that you need to know before planning your seat purchase and installation to be able to pass the vehicle registration process.

Sweden & Norway

  • You cannot install a seat from another vehicle manufacturer.
  • You cannot install a front seat in the back of the vehicle.
  • The seat must be tested and approved (according to ECE 14, 16 & 17) for the exact vehicle, placement and mounting.
  • When using original seats, both the vehicle and the seat must be approved for that exact placement and mounting.
  • The installation of original seats requires a certificate from the vehicle manufacturer or it´s general agent.
  • Using original seats might require adding extra support, like beams or plates , beneath the vehicle floor to support the seating structure.
  • The installation can be done by the vehicle owner, it does NOT need to be installed by a certified workshop.

Denmark

  • The rules in Denmark is a bit less strict.
  • The seat must be TUV approved but there are no requirement for it to be approved for the exact  vehicle, placement and mounting.
  • Installing seats might require adding extra support, like beams or plates , beneath the vehicle floor to support the seating structure.
  • The installation can be done by the vehicle owner, it does NOT need to be installed by a certified workshop.

Finland

  • You cannot install a seat from another vehicle manufacturer.
  • You cannot install a front seat in the back of the vehicle.
  • The seat must be tested and approved (according to ECE 14, 16 & 17) for the exact vehicle, placement and mounting.
  • The installation can be done by the vehicle owner, it does NOT need to be installed by a certified workshop.

What should I do next?

  • Buy a TUV approved third-party passenger seat that can be installed by you, us, or a workshop, like ours! Yes we know that we a bit biased, but it is the easiest and most cost-effective solution available. You can find more information on the process of installing our seats if you scroll down!
  • Buy a double-cab vehicle with already approved seats installed, they are generally more expensive and harder to find.
  • Buy a new seat from the vehicle manufacturer and get assistance from an authorized service garage to have it installed. This still requires a certificate from the vehicle manufacturer or it´s general agent.
  • Buy an older vehicle, that gives you more options and the regulations is not as strict.

How do I proceed?

We offer different seats that are available in our store here! The procedure for installing and registering the seats is the same regardless of which variant you choose and all seats are TUV certified. We have chosen to describe the process of installing our seats in the form of a checklist!

Step 1 - Seat selection

Start by looking at the different alternatives, the seats we sell are available with different options. If you are looking for the most complete solution possible, choose the model that comes with both padding and standard fabric.

Step 2 - Request reports

For each of our seats there is a TUV certification report and it is unique for each seat model. You can find a complete list of vehicles included in the approvals and a form to request the reports needed in PDF format on our approvals page here!

Step 3 - Verify

After you have downloaded the TUV report from our website, the best thing to do is to contact the inspection engineer at the inspection station you plan to use for the registration inspection. Ask the inspection engineer to review the TUV report and verify that it is possible to get the installation approved.

By doing this in advance, you avoid getting an unpleasant surprise if the inspection engineer gets in the way when you arrive at the inspection station and have to carry out the registration inspection. As the seats we sell have a type approval, there should be no problem registering the vehicle with the new seats as long as the installation has been carried out correctly.

If you are located in Sweden we recommend that you contact Fordonsprovarna i Väst AB in Gothenburg regarding registration inspection:

Phone: 031-3186281

Step 4 - Order

When the inspection engineer has announced that it is possible to approve an installation that has been carried out according to the TUV report, it is time to order the seat. You will find both seats and all variants for each seat in our web shop. Remember that we do not have seats in stock so expect a delivery time of 2-8 weeks. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions before ordering!

Step 5 - Installation

When the seat has been delivered, it is time for assembly and installation, you will find assembly and installation instructions in the packaging and the installation is also described in the TUV report. Please note that all seat models must be installed on the vehicle’s metal floor, it is not approved for installation on floors of other materials laid on top of the vehicle’s metal floor.

NOTE: be sure to document the installation properly by photographing all the steps so that you can show the inspection engineer how the installation is done. This is especially important if, for example, insulation and flooring are laid over the installed rails.

Step 6 - Registration inspection

The last step is to carry out the registration inspection together with the inspection engineer who went through the TUV report in step 3. If it is the case that the installation is made according to the TUV report, the registration inspection should go without problems.

Thats it!
